Why You Feel Pulled in Different Directions

Smiling lesbian couple with their child enjoying quality time together, symbolizing IFS therapy in Concord NC where every part of the family belongs.

Have you ever noticed how one part of you wants to rest, while another pushes you to keep hustling? Or how you can feel confident in one moment but overwhelmed and small in the next?

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Most of us carry many “parts” inside of us—different voices, feelings, and roles that show up depending on the situation. It can feel confusing, like you’re being pulled in opposite directions, but there’s nothing wrong with you. In fact, this is how humans are wired.

At Heartbeat Therapy & Wellness, we use a powerful approach called Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. It’s based on the belief that every part of you belongs—and when you learn to listen with compassion, you can move toward balance, healing, and wholeness.

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?

IFS is a type of therapy that helps you understand and connect with the different parts of yourself. Think of your inner world like a family:

  • Some parts are protectors—they want to keep you safe, often by keeping you small, quiet, or busy.

  • Some parts are exiles—the hurt, younger parts that carry heavy emotions like shame, fear, or sadness.

  • And then there’s your Self—the calm, compassionate core of who you are.

In IFS, we believe you’re not broken. You already have everything you need inside of you. Therapy simply helps you untangle the noise, so your calm, centered Self can lead the way.

Why We Struggle with Our Parts

Sometimes, instead of working together, our parts fight for control. Here are a few examples:

  • A part of you wants to say “no” and set boundaries, but another part fears rejection if you speak up.

  • A part of you longs to rest, but another insists you’ll be lazy if you stop moving.

  • A part of you craves love, but another pushes people away to avoid getting hurt.

These conflicts can leave you feeling stuck, anxious, or overwhelmed. IFS offers a gentle roadmap out of that tug-of-war.

The Healing Power of Self-Energy

At the heart of IFS is the idea of Self-Energy. When you’re in Self, you naturally embody qualities like:

  • Compassion 💙

  • Curiosity 🌱

  • Creativity 🎨

  • Courage 🌈

  • Clarity ✨

  • Calm 🌊

  • Connectedness 🤝

  • Confidence 🌟

Therapy helps you access more Self-Energy so you can meet your parts with kindness instead of judgment. That’s where real healing begins.

What an IFS Session Looks Like at Heartbeat

Many people wonder: What happens in an IFS session? Here’s what you might experience:

  1. Grounding Together – We start with a breath, a pause, or a simple check-in to settle into the present.

  2. Exploring a Part – You might notice a sensation in your body, a thought that keeps repeating, or a feeling that’s been loud lately. We’ll gently get curious about it.

  3. Meeting Your Part – We ask that part how old it feels, what role it’s been playing, and what it needs from you.

  4. Building Compassion – Instead of pushing that part away, we learn to listen to it, thank it, and care for it.

  5. Unburdening & Healing – Over time, your parts begin to release old pain and trust your Self to lead.

IFS is not about “fixing” you—it’s about helping you feel whole again.

Who Can Benefit from IFS Therapy?

IFS can help almost anyone, but it’s especially powerful for people who:

  • Feel anxious, overwhelmed, or “too much.”

  • Struggle with perfectionism, people-pleasing, or self-criticism.

  • Carry childhood wounds or past trauma that still affect their daily life.

  • Are neurodivergent (ADHD, autism, highly sensitive) and want therapy that honors their way of being.

  • Identify as LGBTQIA+ and are seeking affirming therapy that celebrates every part of who they are.

  • Experience burnout as caregivers, therapists, or helpers.

At Heartbeat Therapy & Wellness, we specialize in working with sensitive souls, healers, and neurodivergent individuals who want to live more authentically.

A Gentle Example: Meeting the Inner Critic

Let’s imagine you have a loud Inner Critic that says:

  • “You’re not doing enough.”

  • “You should have known better.”

  • “Other people are stronger than you.”

In IFS, instead of battling this voice, we’d get curious:

  • What is the Critic trying to protect you from?

  • When did it first start showing up in your life?

  • How has it been trying to help, even if it hurts?

Often, we discover that this Critic began as a protector—maybe when you were young, it thought being perfect was the only way to stay safe or loved. When you see it this way, the Critic softens. Healing begins not with silencing, but with compassion.

The Gift of Group Healing

Individual therapy is powerful, but healing in community can be life-changing. At Heartbeat, we offer groups where people explore parts work together, including:

  • Kids Anxiety Support Group (Ages 8–12) – Mondays at 4 PM. A playful, creative group that helps children understand their feelings, build coping tools, and connect with others who “get it.”

  • LGBTQIA+ Teen Support Group – Wednesdays at 4:30 PM. A safe, affirming space for teens to be themselves, share openly, and find belonging.

  • Neurodivergent Support Group – Wednesdays at 6 PM. A community for autistic and ADHD teens and young adults to celebrate their unique strengths while learning practical tools for daily life.

  • Couples Support Group – Fridays at 7 PM. A warm, guided space for couples to reconnect, communicate, and heal together.

Groups remind us: you are not alone, and every part of you deserves belonging.

Practical Ways to Connect With Your Parts at Home

You don’t have to wait for therapy to start listening to your parts. Here are three gentle practices:

  1. Pause & Name the FeelingWhen you notice a strong emotion, try saying:“A part of me feels anxious right now.”This separates you from the feeling—you are not the anxiety, you’re the one noticing it.

  2. Write a Dialogue ✍️Open a journal and let one part “speak,” then respond with curiosity. This can unlock surprising wisdom.

  3. Offer Compassion 💜Place a hand on your heart and say: “I see you. I’m here for you.” Even if it feels small, your parts notice when you show up.

You Are Already Whole

If you’ve ever thought, “Something is wrong with me”—IFS offers a different truth:Nothing is wrong with you. Every part of you has a story. Every part of you deserves compassion. And together, they make you beautifully, humanly whole.

At Heartbeat Therapy & Wellness, we believe that every part belongs. If you’re ready to meet yourself in a deeper way, we’d love to walk alongside you.
